We all know that baking soda is one of the most versatile home remedies in your pantry, or refrigerator. This $1.00 kitchen staple can be used to clean our home, improve your health, or your looks, and more!
One of my most favorite uses for baking soda is to give my shampoo a little extra oomph on the days when my hair needs some super-strong cleansing. My hair is naturally thin, fine, and oily. It doesn’t take much for my hair to feel limp and lifeless especially after repeated product use.

On occasion, I simply just pour a tablespoon of baking soda into my hand along with my usual amount of shampoo, and lather up, focusing especially on the roots. The lather gets extra thick, and helps my shampoo go a little further for that extra clean feeling. Just as I would with any shampoo, I work the mixture into my scalp using my fingers and rinse as usual. The baking soda helps boost my shampoos oil-fighting powers and my hair looks so soft, shiny, oil-free, and 100 x’s more manageable, voluminous, and stronger afterwards.
If I’m feeling super ambitious, with time to spare, I’ll even do an apple cider vinegar rinse. I keep a squeeze bottle, of 1 part apple cider vinegar to four parts water, in my bathroom for easy access and application. The vinegar helps restore the pH balance of my hair and adds shine.
Yes, baking soda does help reduce oil and product buildup, but repeated use can cause dryness, breakage, and damage. I try to keep my usage to a minimum of maybe, maybe once a month, if that. Mostly when I notice my hair is lacking in fullness and volume.
